ASC addressed the security vulnerabilities after the breach was disclosed.

What Happened

On June 18, 2020, the Pinoy Grayhats hacker group gained unauthorized access to the website of Apayao State College (ASC) at asc.edu.ph. ASC is a state college located in the remote province of Apayao in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Why This Breach Matters

  • No school is too remote — Apayao is one of the most remote provinces in the Philippines, yet its state college was still targeted
  • State colleges at risk — government-funded institutions often have even fewer IT security resources than private universities
  • Pandemic exposure — the rapid shift to online services during COVID-19 exposed institutions that had previously operated primarily offline

Lessons for Schools

  1. 1.Remote location is not security — any internet-connected system is reachable by attackers worldwide
  2. 2.State colleges need security budgets — government funding should include allocations for cybersecurity
  3. 3.Basic security hygiene matters — even simple measures like updated software, strong passwords, and SSL certificates can prevent most attacks
