What Happened
On June 27, 2020, the Pinoy Greyhats conducted a data leak targeting the Taguig campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). This was a separate incident from the PUP Sta. Mesa main campus breach that occurred on June 18, 2020.
Why This Breach Matters
- Multiple PUP campuses hit — both the Sta. Mesa main campus and the Taguig campus were breached within days of each other, suggesting systemic vulnerabilities across PUP's infrastructure
- Data leak severity — this was classified as a data leak (not just defacement), meaning student information was actually exfiltrated
- State university impact — PUP is one of the largest state universities in the Philippines by enrollment
Lessons for Schools
- 1.Centralized security for multi-campus institutions — all campuses should operate under a unified security policy and monitoring system
- 2.After one breach, audit all campuses — when one campus is compromised, immediately assess all other campuses for the same vulnerabilities
- 3.Consistent security standards — satellite campuses should not have lower security standards than the main campus
